Monitoring selenium concentration is useful in assessing parenteral nutrition intake and in managing special diets in children with conditions such as propionic acidemia.
Special Instructions
Patient should refrain from taking vitamins or mineral supplements at least three days prior to specimen collection; for New York patients, orders are redirected to Quest Diagnostics Nichols Institute–Chantilly, VA.

Collection Instructions
Carefully clean skin prior to venipuncture; avoid worksite collection; avoid hemolysis; use royal blue‑top trace metal evacuated tube (EDTA, heparin, or no additive); do not use gel barrier tubes; centrifuge within 1 hour and separate into trace element vial; indicate Metal Free on specimen and batch sheet.
