Toxocara Antibody (IgG), Serum
Use
This serologic test (ELISA) detects IgG-class antibodies to Toxocara species and aids in the diagnosis of toxocariasis, including visceral larva migrans and ocular larva migrans. It helps identify current or past exposure, though antibody levels may remain elevated for years. A negative result typically rules out infection; however, clinical correlation, including eosinophilia and exposure history, is required since assay sensitivity varies by disease location and timing. False positives may occur with other helminth infections.
Special Instructions
Not provided.
Limitations
Results must be interpreted with caution due to broad variations in antibody responses and potential for antibody persistence years after infection. A negative result does not necessarily exclude infection, especially in ocular toxocariasis where levels may be low or absent. False-positive results may happen with other helminth infections, and the test does not distinguish acute from remote infection.
