Varicella‑Zoster Virus Antibody (IgG)
Also known as: Varicella IgG Antibodies, VZV IgG, Shingles, Herpes Zoster IgG Ab, Chicken Pox
Use
This test detects IgG-class antibodies to varicella‑zoster virus (VZV) and is useful for determining an individual’s immune status or aiding in the diagnosis of VZV infection. A positive IgG indicates the presence of antibodies; while it cannot distinguish between past and current infection, when active disease is not suspected, a positive result most likely indicates immunity from prior infection. However, vaccinated individuals may have lower antibody levels that might evade detection by this assay. Limitations
A positive IgG result cannot differentiate between active and past infection; interpretation requires clinical correlation including patient history and presentation. Additionally, antibody levels from vaccination may be lower than those from natural infection, possibly leading to false-negative results in vaccinated individuals.
