VMA (Vanillylmandelic Acid), 24‑Hour Urine without Creatinine
Also known as: VMA, VMA, 24hr Urine
Clinical Use
Order TestUse
Measurement of vanillylmandelic acid (VMA) in a 24‑hour urine collection is used for detection and monitoring of catecholamine‑secreting tumors such as neuroblastoma and occasionally pheochromocytoma. Elevated levels may suggest such tumors, though additional confirmatory testing is required.

Limitations
Elevated VMA alone is not diagnostic; up to 20‑32% of neuroblastoma patients may not have elevated VMA. VMA is not the preferred analyte for pheochromocytoma (metanephrines are more sensitive).
