Use
The 17-Hydroxypregnenolone 30-Minute Timed Specimen test is used primarily for diagnosing disorders related to adrenal and gonadal steroid biosynthesis, including congenital adrenal hyperplasia. It measures the level of 17-Hydroxypregnenolone in the blood, which is a precursor in the synthesis of cortisol, androgens, and estrogens. This test can be crucial for evaluating patients with ambiguous genitalia or other signs of hormonal imbalance.
Special Instructions
Serum or plasma must be separated from cells as soon as possible or within two hours of collection. Transfer the specimen to an ARUP Standard Transport Tube and freeze immediately. When multiple tests are ordered, separate specimens must be submitted.
Limitations
The test is not FDA-approved and is conducted in a CLIA-certified laboratory. Results may vary based on pre-test preparation, specimen handling, and timing of specimen collection. Ambient and refrigerated conditions are unacceptable, which could influence the specimen integrity and subsequently, the test results.
