Use

This test is designed to measure the levels of 5-alpha-Dihydrotestosterone (DHT) in the serum. DHT is an androgen that plays a critical role in the development of male characteristics and is associated with conditions such as prostate cancer, male pattern baldness, and androgenic alopecia. The test is commonly used in cases where there is a need to understand the androgen status of an individual, particularly in disorders of sexual differentiation, evaluation of androgen-secreting tumors, and in the diagnosis and management of patients with 5-alpha reductase deficiency.

Special Instructions

Specimens must be collected in a plain red or serum separator tube (SST), and it is essential to separate the serum from cells as soon as possible, ideally within 2 hours of collection. The serum must then be transferred to an ARUP standard transport tube and frozen immediately to preserve the sample's integrity.

Limitations

This test has not been cleared or approved by the US Food and Drug Administration; however, it has been developed and its performance characteristics determined by ARUP Laboratories. The test is performed in a CLIA certified laboratory and is intended solely for clinical purposes. Results may be impacted by hemolyzed or lipemic specimens, which are therefore deemed unacceptable for analysis.
