Use
Dihydrotestosterone measurement is used to diagnose 5α-reductase deficiency and for the evaluation of androgen utilization. Dihydrotestosterone is produced by the reduction of testosterone by 5α-reductase in the target organs. Circulating dihydrotestosterone is tightly bound to sex hormone-binding globulin. The free fraction represents the dihydrotestosterone available to act on tissues.
Special Instructions
Ensure to separate serum or plasma from cells within four hours of collection to maintain sample integrity. The specimen should be sent in a plastic transport tube. For multiple test requests on frozen samples, submit separate frozen specimens to avoid delays in turnaround time.
Limitations
This test has been developed and its performance characteristics determined by LabCorp. However, it has not been cleared or approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), which may impact its acceptance for certain clinical applications. Incorrect sample handling, such as using EDTA plasma or samples that are grossly hemolyzed, icteric, or lipemic, can compromise the test results.
