Use

The test is used for the identification of aerobic bacterial isolates and determining their in vitro susceptibility to antimicrobial agents. This helps in selecting appropriate antibiotic treatment for bacterial infections by identifying clinically significant aerobic organisms and testing their resistance or susceptibility to various antibiotics.

Special Instructions

For suspected bioterrorism agents, such as Salmonella or Shigella, notify the state health department. Refer isolates to the state laboratory for identification. Susceptibility testing on bioterrorism agents is not performed by ARUP. An additional charge applies for mixed cultures and depends on the specimen source and organism type suspected.

Limitations

Testing and billed charges are dependent on the specimen source and type of suspected organism. Susceptibility testing will not be done automatically on organisms of unknown clinical significance unless specifically requested. The biochemical, mass spectrometry, or sequencing methods used may not detect all aerobic organisms or their susceptibilities, and some organisms may not grow under aerobic conditions.
