Use
This test is used to evaluate the risk of IgE-mediated allergic reactions to peanuts. It assesses the presence and concentration of allergen-specific IgE in the patient's serum. Elevated levels indicate sensitization to peanut allergens, although the exact clinical significance of the concentration may be variable and does not always correlate with the severity of allergic reactions. Referral to a specialist is recommended for interpretation of results, particularly for levels within the 0.10-0.34 kU/L range where clinical relevance is undetermined.
Special Instructions
Multiple patient encounters should be avoided. This assay will automatically reflex to test for 6 unique peanut protein components if the initial result is 0.1 kU/L or higher, with additional charges incurred for the reflex testing.
Limitations
Results should be interpreted in conjunction with the patient's clinical history and in vivo reactivity. The presence of allergen-specific IgE does not always correlate with the occurrence of allergic reactions or anaphylaxis upon exposure to peanuts. Sensitivity and specificity are not absolute, and false negatives or positives are possible. The test may not rule out the possibility of an allergic reaction.
