Use

The Alpha-1-Antitrypsin Clearance test is used to quantify the clearance of alpha-1-antitrypsin in stool samples to help assess conditions that may lead to protein loss from the gastrointestinal tract, such as protein-losing enteropathy. It measures the concentration of alpha-1-antitrypsin in both serum (or plasma) and a 24-, 48-, or 72-hour stool collection. The test provides valuable information for diagnosing and managing patients with suspected diseases related to abnormal protein clearance.

Special Instructions

For accurate results, a timed stool collection is necessary along with a serum or plasma sample collected during the stool collection time interval. Utilize the Timed Stool Collection Kit provided by ARUP for the stool specimens. The serum or plasma sample should be clotted and separated from cells at room temperature before transfer to a transport tube.

Limitations

The test may yield inaccurate results if the serum or plasma sample is hemolyzed or if the stool specimens contain preservatives. The alpha-1-antitrypsin stool clearance can only be reported as a 'greater than' value if the fecal concentration exceeds the measuring range. Freeze/thaw cycles should be avoided for serum or plasma samples to ensure stability and integrity of the analytes.
