Use
This test differentiates the nonscheduled and DEA-scheduled isomers of amphetamine and methamphetamine in urine. It is especially useful for identifying the source of amphetamines detected—whether they are due to prescription medication or illicit substances. Accurate differentiation of D- and L-isomers can assist in the interpretation of drug tests, helping healthcare providers assess compliance to prescribed therapies or identify potential illicit substance use.
Special Instructions
Specimens are not processed at ARUP and must be submitted separately if multiple orders are made. Samples should be transferred to an ARUP standard transport tube with a minimum volume of 0.7 mL. The test requires urine as the specimen type and is approved for testing in New York State.
Limitations
The test performance was determined by NMS Labs and has not been cleared or approved by the FDA. Results should be interpreted in the context of the patient's full clinical situation given factors such as cross-reactivity or presence of other drugs. D-methamphetamine at more than 20% of total methamphetamine is indicative of sources other than over-the-counter products, potentially pointing to illicit drug use or specific prescribed medications.
