Anaerobic Organism Identification with Reflex to Susceptibility

Use
This test is designed for the identification of anaerobic bacterial isolates and subsequent determination of in vitro susceptibility to antimicrobial agents. It is suitable for promoting optimal patient management by directing appropriate antimicrobial therapy, especially in the case of serious infections involving blood, bone, joint, tissue, or brain abscess.
Special Instructions
Submission of purely cultivated colonies is required to ensure valid results. Indicate the suspected pathogen on the requisition. Avoid submitting isolates in liquid media as this can lead to mixed or non-viable cultures, resulting in delays and increased costs.
Limitations
Susceptibility testing is not automatically performed on isolates of unknown clinical significance, although it can be requested. Mixed cultures or non-viable organisms are unacceptable for testing. Also, interpret results with caution as there are currently no CLSI guidelines for susceptibility testing of anaerobes other than the Bacteroides fragilis group.

Collection Instructions
Submit actively growing organism, in pure culture. Place each specimen in an individually sealed bag.
Storage Instructions
Room temperature. Submit according to Infectious Substance, Category A, shipping guidelines if necessary.

Mixed cultures or non-viable organisms.
