Use
The test is designed to determine the in vitro susceptibility of Enterococcus species to various antimicrobial agents. This information is crucial for guiding appropriate antibiotic therapy in infections caused by Enterococcus spp. The test helps in tailoring treatment options based on the susceptibility profile of the microorganism, ensuring effective management of infections.
Special Instructions
Transport the specimens in a sealed container with pure culture on agar slant or in bacterial transport media. Ensure each specimen is placed in an individually sealed bag. A pure culture is required; otherwise, additional processing and fees will apply. Identification of the isolate is necessary, and if not provided, it will be performed at ARUP with additional charges. Selective reporting is applied based on the organism and source.
Limitations
The test cannot determine the susceptibility of mixed cultures or nonviable organisms. Results are limited to the antibiotics tested, which include ampicillin, daptomycin, high-level gentamicin, levofloxacin, linezolid, nitrofurantoin, quinupristin/dalfopristin, high-level streptomycin, tetracycline, and vancomycin. Susceptibility results are categorized as susceptible, intermediate, or resistant. The test is not suitable for frozen samples and has specific stability conditions: ambient temperature for 1 week and refrigerated for 48 hours.
