Use
Bartonella (formerly Rochalimaea) henselae has become firmly established as the primary etiologic agent for cat scratch disease (CSD). Bartonella quintana, known for some time as a cause of trench fever, is also associated with CSD and bacillary angiomatosis (BA). Both diseases frequently affect immunocompromised patients, particularly those infected with HIV-1. Although CSD is generally a self-limiting disease, it can be life-threatening.
Special Instructions
The test includes the detection and quantification of antibodies IgG and IgM for both Bartonella henselae and Bartonella quintana. It is essential to handle the specimens properly to avoid hemolysis, lipemia, and bacterial contamination, which can lead to rejection of the sample.
Limitations
Cross-reactivity between IgG classes of B. henselae and B. quintana may occur, potentially affecting test specificity. The test was developed by Labcorp and its performance characteristics determined accordingly, but it is not cleared or approved by the FDA as such clearance is deemed unnecessary by the FDA.
