Use
This test may assist in confirming a current or past Bartonella henselae infection. A low positive result suggests past exposure or infection, while a high positive result may indicate recent or current infection. However, seroconversion between acute and convalescent sera is considered strong evidence of recent infection. The best evidence for infection is a significant change on two appropriately timed specimens where both tests are conducted in the same laboratory at the same time.
Special Instructions
Parallel testing is preferred, and convalescent specimens must be received within 30 days from receipt of the acute specimens. Mark specimens plainly as 'acute' or 'convalescent.'
Limitations
A low positive result suggests past exposure or infection, while high positive results may indicate recent or current infection, but are inconclusive for diagnosis. The test should not be the sole basis for diagnosis; seroconversion between appropriately timed acute and convalescent sera is more reliable. It is important to conduct both tests in the same laboratory at the same time for accurate comparability.
