BK Virus by Quantitative NAAT, Plasma

Use
This test is used to detect and quantify BK virus in plasma. It is primarily utilized to monitor viral load in transplant patients, where BK virus reactivation can contribute to nephropathy and other complications. Quantification helps in tailoring antiviral treatment and immunosuppressive therapy to prevent organ rejection.
Special Instructions
For this test, it is important to separate plasma from cells within 24 hours of collection. The plasma should then be transferred to an ARUP standard transport tube. This test is approved for use in New York State.
Limitations
The quantitative range of this assay is 1.33 to 8.00 log IU/mL (21.5 to 100,000,000 IU/mL). An interpretation of 'Not Detected' does not exclude the presence of inhibitors or BK virus DNA concentration below the detection limit of the assay. Variations in assay results may occur due to standardization discrepancies across laboratories.
