Use
Use this test to detect Blastomyces antibodies in serum, assisting in the diagnosis of blastomycosis. It is recommended to use this test in conjunction with histology or culture for an accurate diagnosis. The presence of Blastomyces antibodies indicates a possible infection by Blastomyces dermatitidis, an infectious fungus that can cause inflammatory lung disease and other systemic infections.
Special Instructions
Ensure serum is separated from cells as soon as possible or within two hours of collection. If immunoassay results are equivocal or positive, reflex testing to immunodiffusion will occur, leading to additional charges.
Limitations
The test detects total antibodies against yeast-phase antigens from Blastomyces dermatitidis. Negative results do not exclude the possibility of blastomycosis, especially in cases of recent infection. Elevated EIA results combined with negative immunodiffusion may suggest early infection or a false positive; repeat testing is recommended.
