Order Test

Use

This test is used to provide evidence of vaccination or past infection with Bordetella pertussis. However, it does not determine immunity to B. pertussis. It's important to note that serology testing is not generally recommended for diagnosing active pertussis infections. The CDC recommends Bordetella pertussis/parapertussis by PCR and/or Bordetella pertussis Culture as first-line tests for suspected cases of pertussis. Positive results in this test may indicate a current or recent exposure or immunization against B. pertussis.

Special Instructions

If the Bordetella pertussis Antibody, IgG by ELISA result is 1.05 IV or greater, an Immunoblot test will be added automatically. This may incur additional charges to the patient. For New York State clients, specimens will be sent to a New York state-approved laboratory as the test is not approved for use in New York. Ensure specimens are clearly marked as 'acute' or 'convalescent' when sent for parallel testing.

Limitations

The test cannot determine immunity to Bordetella pertussis and is not recommended for diagnosing active infections. The specificity of the ELISA may not differentiate between current infection and past immunization or exposure. Although the test offers a semi-quantitative evaluation, equivocal results may require repeat testing to confirm. Exposure to Bordetella pertussis should be correlated with clinical presentation and history for accurate assessment.
