Use

This test is a reflex test for diagnosing Lyme disease in symptomatic individuals, intended for use more than four weeks after symptom onset. It follows the standard two-tiered testing (STTT) approach. A positive or equivocal ELISA screen is confirmed by an IgG immunoblot. The test detects antibodies to VlsE1 and pepC10 antigens of Borrelia burgdorferi, the causative agent of Lyme disease. Early detection of these antibodies is crucial for timely intervention and management of Lyme disease.

Special Instructions

Additional charges apply if the test reflexes to IgG Immunoblot when VlsE1/pepC10 antibodies by ELISA are 0.91 IV or greater. The test is performed from Monday to Friday, and reported within 1 to 4 days. New York state approval ensures that the test can be conducted within New York.

Limitations

The test may yield equivocal results requiring repeat testing after 10 to 14 days. Specimens that are plasma, CSF, contaminated, heat-inactivated, hemolyzed, icteric, or lipemic are considered unacceptable due to potential for inaccurate results. Reflex testing is not recommended or performed if the initial ELISA result is negative, as the presence of B. burgdorferi antibodies is not detected.
