Use

Aid in the detection of insulinoma. May aid in distinguishing type 1 from type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM) in ambiguous cases. This test is used to evaluate C-peptide levels, which can offer insights into endogenous insulin production and help differentiate between different types of diabetes as well as monitor treatment efficacy in conditions like insulinoma.

Special Instructions

Fasting specimen preferred for optimal results. Blood should be collected into a serum separator tube and allowed to clot at room temperature. The specimen should be separated from cells as soon as possible and no later than two hours post-collection for accurate results.

Limitations

The test should not be used as the exclusive basis for diagnosing diabetes mellitus (DM). While C-peptide levels can provide valuable insights, they do not directly indicate blood glucose levels or give a complete picture of insulin activity. Additionally, results may be influenced by factors such as improper blood sample handling, hemolysis, or patient preparation, potentially leading to inaccurate readings.
