Use
The Creatine Kinase Isoenzymes test aids in determining the etiology of elevated total creatine kinase levels in a patient. It helps identify the presence of macro creatine kinase, which can be significant in evaluating various medical conditions. This test is particularly useful for assessing skeletal muscle disorders, myocardial infarction, and muscle damage. It might complement other diagnostic measures such as Troponin testing, especially in cases related to acute coronary syndrome.
Special Instructions
Troponin testing is recommended for diagnosis and management of acute coronary syndrome; refer to Troponin T (cTnT) 5th Generation (3001831).
Limitations
The electrophoretic method used in the test is imprecise when applied to specimens with total CK values below 73 U/L. Thus, isoenzyme results need careful interpretation in such cases. Specimens collected with citrate, EDTA, fluoride, heparin, or iodoacetate are unacceptable. Grossly hemolyzed specimens are also not suitable for analysis. Attention should be paid to avoiding repeated freeze-thaw cycles of samples to maintain integrity.
