Use
This test aids in the evaluation of patients with conditions such as vasculitis, macroglobulinemia, or multiple myeloma, particularly when symptoms are triggered by exposure to cold. Cryoglobulins are associated with certain plasma cell and lymphoproliferative disorders but can also be seen in collagen vascular diseases, hepatitis C infection, and infections like infectious mononucleosis and cytomegalovirus disease. The qualitative screen identifies the presence of cryoglobulin, and if detected, further quantitative analysis of immunoglobulins IgA, IgG, and IgM is performed, aiding in the differential diagnosis.
Special Instructions
Proper collection and transport of the specimen is critical. The specimen must be kept at 37 degrees C until clotting is complete, and the serum separated from cells as soon as possible. Submitting less than the recommended volume of serum may affect the test's sensitivity.
Limitations
The test may not detect cryoglobulins present in very low concentrations or those that do not demonstrate a pronounced cold precipitation. Plasma and samples collected in serum separator tubes are unacceptable, as are grossly hemolyzed or lipemic specimens. Samples frozen after separation from cells or not collected as instructed may provide inaccurate results.

Collection Instructions
Draw approximately 7 mL of blood into a prewarmed (37 degrees C) plain red tube. Maintain at 37 degrees C until clotting is complete (up to 1 hour), then separate serum from cells ASAP.
Patient Preparation
Fasting specimen required: Overnight or minimum of 8 hours.
Storage Instructions
Store and transport at room temperature. Refrigeration is also acceptable.
