Use
The Dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) Sulfate test is used to evaluate adrenal gland function. DHEA sulfate is a hormone that plays a role in the development of secondary sexual characteristics and is a precursor to male and female sex hormones. Measuring DHEA sulfate levels helps in diagnosing disorders related to the adrenal glands, such as adrenal insufficiency, adrenal tumors, congenital adrenal hyperplasia, and Cushing's syndrome.
Special Instructions
This test requires the collection of specimens at multiple time points following administration of medication or treatment such as glucola. Ensure that the clinician is informed and provides guidelines on why a series is ordered. Patients must be asked about any biotin supplementation and advised to stop intake at least 72 hours before the test due to potential interference.
Limitations
Test results may be affected by biotin supplementation, which can cause assay interference. Ensure patients suspend biotin intake 72 hours prior to the test. The test is not suitable for situations where the patient does not receive any treatment between draws. Proper series collection is crucial for accurate results, and variations in collection times may affect the assessment of adrenal function.
