Use
This quantitative urine test measures alcohol metabolites ethyl glucuronide (EtG) and ethyl sulfate (EtS) to determine whether an individual has been exposed to ethanol. Including both metabolites enhances specificity, as EtS indicates in vivo alcohol exposure while EtG can be produced in vitro. EtG is reported positive only when EtS is ≥100 ng/mL.
Special Instructions
Test is performed on specimens upon arrival at the laboratory; report returned within indicated turnaround time. Interpretation of positive results should consider potential incidental alcohol exposure (e.g., from products containing ethanol).
Limitations
EtG may be produced in vitro by ethanol-producing bacteria, potentially resulting in false positives unless corroborated by EtS. Incidental exposure to alcohol-containing products can yield positive results. Quantitative values reflect exposure but do not indicate quantity of ingestion or timing; interpret within clinical context.
