Use

This test is useful in assessing acute and chronic exposure to arsenic, mercury, and lead. It helps identify toxic or harmful exposure levels in individuals, particularly those with potential occupational exposure or for patients showing symptoms consistent with heavy metal toxicity. The test reflexes to measure specific forms of arsenic if the total arsenic concentration is elevated, aiding in determining the toxic potential and source of exposure.

Special Instructions

Patients should discontinue nutritional supplements, avoid shellfish and seafood 48-72 hours prior to testing. Urine specimens should not be collected within 72 hours of exposure to iodinated or gadolinium-based contrast media. For patients with impaired kidney function, avoid collection within 14 days of such media exposure.

Limitations

Results can be impacted by contamination or non-compliance with collection and preparation instructions. High concentrations of iodine may interfere with elemental testing, and results may vary with dietary intake and supplementation. Elevated results might require confirmation with a second specimen from a certified trace element-free container.

Collection Instructions

Collect 24-hour or random urine in plastic container, refrigerate during collection. Transfer 8 mL aliquot to transport tube from well-Mixed collection.

Patient Preparation

Avoid supplements, shellfish, seafood 48-72 hours prior. Avoid collecting within 72 hours post contrast media.

Storage Instructions

Refrigerated; also acceptable: room temperature or frozen.

Causes for Rejection

Urine collected within 72 hours after media administration, acid-preserved urine, specimens contaminated with blood or fecal material, non-trace element-free transport.
