Use
This test is useful in the assessment of acute and chronic exposure to heavy metals like arsenic, cadmium, mercury, and lead. It is particularly used for monitoring levels of these metals and aiding in their treatment through chelation therapy. Urinary mercury concentrations predominantly reflect elemental or inorganic mercury exposure. Arsenic fractionation helps determine the proportions of inorganic, methylated, and organic arsenic species, important for understanding exposure and toxicity levels.
Special Instructions
Patients should discontinue supplements, vitamins, nonessential medications, and avoid shellfish and seafood 48 to 72 hours before specimen collection. The Public Health Demographics Form should be submitted only if complete demographic information is not transmitted to ARUP.
Limitations
Elevated results may be due to contamination, such as from non-certified trace element-free containers. If suspected, confirmation with a second collection is recommended. High concentrations of iodine from contrast media can interfere with results.

Collection Instructions
Collect 24-hour or random urine in a plastic container. Refrigerate during collection. Avoid collection within 72 hours after gadolinium-based contrast media.
Patient Preparation
Discontinue nutritional supplements, minerals, and avoid certain foods 48 to 72 hours prior.
Storage Instructions
Refrigerated. Room temperature or frozen also acceptable.
Causes for Rejection
Urine collected within 72 hours of contrast media, acid-preserved urine, blood/fecal contamination.
