Homocysteine
Use
This test measures the level of the amino acid homocysteine in blood. Elevated homocysteine may indicate impaired metabolism and is associated with increased risk of cardiovascular disease, stroke, and blood clots. It may also reflect deficiencies in vitamins B6, B9 (folate), or B12.
Special Instructions
Fasting for 8–12 hours is recommended before collection. No visit to a physician is required to order this test via consumer-initiated services, though an independent healthcare provider oversees the process.
Limitations
Test results may be influenced by vitamin B deficiencies or other conditions; elevated homocysteine may not pinpoint underlying cause and should be interpreted in clinical context.
