Use
The Honeybee test is used to measure the specific IgE antibodies against honeybee venom. This test helps in diagnosing allergic reactions to honeybee stings and determines the severity of such allergies. Measuring specific IgE levels can guide in the management and treatment of allergic conditions, including the consideration for venom immunotherapy in patients with systemic reactions to bee stings.
Special Instructions
This test uses serum collected in a red-top tube or gel-barrier tube. The sample should be kept at room temperature, either refrigerated for up to 14 days or frozen for up to 3 months. Allow no more than three freeze/thaw cycles. Ensure proper labeling and use the correct container to maintain sample integrity.
Limitations
The results of the Honeybee test should be interpreted in the context of the patient's clinical history and symptoms. False-negative and false-positive results may occur due to technical limitations of the test. Cross-reactivity with other allergens may also influence results. Additionally, high levels of total IgE in the patient may give rise to nonspecific binding, leading to an overestimation of specific IgE levels. Furthermore, results might not predict the severity of reactions upon exposure to honeybee venom.
