Use
Evaluate central nervous system involvement by infection, neoplasm, or primary neurologic disease (in particular, multiple sclerosis)
Special Instructions
The third tube of a routinely obtained three-tube set of CSF should be used for the CSF IgG study.
Limitations
Normal IgG levels in CSF do not exclude disease; clinical correlation is necessary. Elevated levels of CSF protein can occur in many conditions affecting the central nervous system. A marked elevation of IgG (>16 mg/dL) occurs in some multiple sclerosis patients, whereas slightly elevated levels (11% to 16%) can overlap with non-MS conditions. During MS patient treatment with ACTH or steroid therapy, CSF IgG levels may decrease but often remain higher than normal.
