Use
This test may be used to evaluate the central nervous system involvement by infection, neoplasm, or primary neurological disease (ie, multiple sclerosis). A local synthesis of IgM within the CNS is most prominent in patients with neuroborreliosis or mumps-meningoencephalitis.
Special Instructions
The third tube of a routinely obtained three-tube set of CSF should be used for the CSF IgM study.
Limitations
This test only measures IgM in cerebrospinal fluid and does not provide information about IgM levels in other body fluids or tissues. The interpretation of the results should consider the clinical context and other laboratory findings, as elevated IgM can also occur due to non-pathological reasons.
