Use
This test measures the levels of immunoglobulins A, E, G, and M in the blood to help diagnose and monitor immunodeficiencies, allergies, and autoimmune disorders. Immunoglobulins are antibodies produced by the immune system to fight against bacteria, viruses, and other pathogens. Abnormally high or low levels could indicate underlying health conditions that require medical evaluation. The test results can aid in the understanding of a patient's immune response and provides crucial information for treatment planning.
Special Instructions
State the patient's age on the request form. The consumption of biotin supplements can interfere with the results of the test. It is recommended that patients stop taking biotin (vitamin B7 or coenzyme R) at least 72 hours before the collection of the sample to avoid any interference. Careful handling is necessary for samples suspected of having macroglobulins or cryoglobulins, which should be maintained at 37°C. Samples with suspected cold agglutinins should not be refrigerated before serum is separated from the clot.
Limitations
Test results may be affected by high doses of biotin supplements, which can lead to inaccurate values. The stability of the serum sample can also impact the test if not maintained properly as outlined in the storage instructions. Furthermore, results may vary based on the collection and handling of samples suspected of having macroglobulins, cryoglobulins, or cold agglutinins, requiring specific handling to ensure accurate readings.
