JC Virus Antibody by ELISA, Serum with Reflex to Inhibition Assay

Use
This qualitative test detects antibodies to the John Cunningham (JC) virus. It is used to aid in risk stratification for the development of progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML) in individuals with multiple sclerosis or Crohn's disease who are receiving natalizumab therapy. Detection of antibodies can indicate exposure to the virus, which is a key factor in assessing the risk of PML.
Special Instructions
If the antibody result is indeterminate, a confirmation (inhibition) assay will be added to ensure accurate diagnosis. Clinical information regarding natalizumab therapy is required for proper test interpretation.
Limitations
The test is not performed at the ARUP laboratory, and separate specimens are necessary when multiple tests are ordered, requiring coordination with different testing facilities. The test results depend on accurate specimen collection and preservation to maintain stability, as room temperature stability lasts one week, refrigerated stability lasts two weeks, and frozen stability lasts three months.
