Use
This test measures pregnenolone levels in serum or plasma using high-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). Pregnenolone is a precursor steroid from cholesterol and is important for synthesizing other hormones including progesterone, cortisol, and estrogens. Assessing pregnenolone levels can help in evaluating adrenal gland function and various endocrine disorders. It provides critical insights into hormone synthesis pathways and can aid physicians in diagnosing disorders linked to steroid hormone imbalances.
Special Instructions
Collect serum using a serum separator tube or other acceptable tubes including plain red, lavender (EDTA), pink (K2EDTA), or green (sodium or lithium heparin). Transfer 0.5 mL of serum or plasma into two ARUP Standard Transport Tubes and freeze immediately. The minimum volume per container is 0.25 mL. Ensure specimens are submitted in a frozen state to maintain stability.
Limitations
This test was developed by ARUP Laboratories and its performance characteristics were determined by the lab. It is not cleared or approved by the FDA. The test is performed in a CLIA-certified laboratory and is intended for clinical purposes, but results should be interpreted with caution considering the limitations associated with laboratory-developed tests (LDTs). Unacceptable conditions for the specimens include refrigerated or room temperature states, which may compromise the test results. Proper specimen preparation and handling are paramount to achieving accurate measurements.
