Clinical Use

Use

The Prostate-specific Antigen (PSA) (Serial Monitor) test is used for the long-term serial monitoring of PSA levels in patients undergoing treatment for prostate-related conditions. PSA is a protein produced by both normal and malignant cells of the prostate gland, and its levels in the blood can help in evaluating prostate health. Monitoring PSA levels over time can aid in assessing the effectiveness of treatment, detect potential recurrence of prostate cancer, and guide treatment decisions. It is recommended to use the same assay method consistently for monitoring the patient's course of therapy.

Special Instructions

The account must submit the patient's Social Security number for monitoring purposes. It is recommended that values obtained with different assay methods should not be used interchangeably in serial testing. Limitations

Values obtained with different assay methods or kits cannot be used interchangeably and are not absolute evidence of the presence or absence of malignant disease. Results should be considered in conjunction with other diagnostic procedures and patient history. Assay results should decrease and remain at undetectable levels after radical prostatectomy. The American Urological Association defines biochemical recurrence as an initial PSA value of 0.2 ng/mL or greater followed by a subsequent confirmatory PSA value of 0.2 ng/mL or greater.
