Protein Electrophoresis, CSF

Use
Protein Electrophoresis, CSF is used to evaluate the protein composition of cerebrospinal fluid. It is not useful for assessing multiple sclerosis; the preferred test in such cases is the Oligoclonal Band Profile. This test may be helpful in diagnosing tumors in the central nervous system or neurological illnesses. However, for evaluating blood-brain barrier integrity, the Immunoglobulin G, CSF Index, included in the Oligoclonal Band Profile test, might be more beneficial.
Special Instructions
Performing this test alongside simultaneous isoelectric focusing electrophoresis of CSF and serum is recommended for confirming the presence of oligoclonal bands in CSF.
Limitations
This test is not suitable for assessing multiple sclerosis, as other tests, such as the Oligoclonal Band Profile, are more appropriate. Additionally, Myelin Basic Protein offers little incremental value in the evaluation of multiple sclerosis.
