Special Instructions
The third tube of a routinely obtained three-tube set of CSF should be used for protein electrophoretic study. The stability of the specimen is 3 days refrigerated and 1 month frozen. Ensure proper storage conditions are maintained for accurate results.
Limitations
While protein electrophoresis is a powerful diagnostic tool, its main limitation is that it cannot provide specificity for the type of proteins present beyond their general classification into major protein groups and spikes. For definitive identification of specific proteins, further tests such as immunofixation electrophoresis (IFE) may be necessary if abnormalities are detected. The test also requires proper specimen handling and storage to prevent degradation and ensure accuracy.
