Use
The Rapid Plasma Reagin (RPR) test is used as an initial screening test for syphilis following the traditional algorithm and serves as a confirmatory test for reactive treponemal tests in the reverse algorithm. It is the preferred test for monitoring treatment response in individuals with established syphilis.
Special Instructions
If the RPR is reactive, a titer will be added, and additional charges may apply. It is crucial to separate serum from cells as soon as possible or within two hours of collection to ensure accurate results. Avoid freezing if possible to maintain the integrity of the specimen.
Limitations
This test has limitations including potential non-reactivity in very early syphilis and in cases of latent or late-stage syphilis. Biological false positives can occur, particularly in individuals with certain viral infections, autoimmune diseases, or during pregnancy. Proper specimen handling and storage are essential to minimize degradation and ensure reliable results.
