Use
This test is used for the detection of syphilis infection. It involves an initial screening with the Rapid Plasma Reagin (RPR) test, which is a non-treponemal test used to detect reagin antibodies associated with syphilis infection. If the RPR test is reactive, the test reflexes to a titer and confirmation using the fluorescent treponemal antibody absorption (FTA-ABS) test. This helps in distinguishing between active infection and past treated infections.
Special Instructions
It is advised to use the Rapid Plasma Reagin (RPR) with Reflex to Titer and TP-PA Confirmation (0050478) for an optimal reflex test instead of this test.
Limitations
The RPR test may give false-negative results during early syphilis or in cases of prozone phenomenon. It may also yield false positives in conditions like pregnancy, autoimmune diseases, and other infections. The FTA-ABS test, while more specific, may not differentiate between active and past infections. Patients with past treated syphilis may remain positive for years.
