Rh Type Only
Also known as: IRL-RH
Use
The Rh Type Only test is used to determine if a patient expresses the Rh D (RH1) antigen. Understanding an individual's Rh status is crucial for blood transfusions and pregnancy care, as mismatched Rh status can lead to hemolytic transfusion reactions or hemolytic disease of the newborn. This information is important for managing Rh-negative individuals and preventing Rh alloimmunization.
Special Instructions
This test is performed Monday through Friday and reported within 1 to 3 days. It is important to use plain red, lavender (K2EDTA), or pink (K2EDTA) tubes for specimen collection, avoiding separator or gel tubes as they are unacceptable for testing. The specimen should be stored and transported refrigerated and must never be frozen.
Limitations
The Rh Type Only test has certain limitations. It cannot be performed on separator or gel tubes, and specimens must not be frozen to avoid degradation of the sample. The test only determines the presence of the Rh D antigen and does not assess for other Rh antigens or antibodies. Samples stored at ambient temperatures are also unacceptable, so proper refrigeration is necessary to maintain sample integrity.
