Elevated rheumatoid factor (RF) is associated with numerous rheumatologic and systemic diseases, most notably rheumatoid arthritis. RF may also be found in conditions such as systemic lupus erythematosus, scleroderma, Sjögren’s syndrome, as well as infections like leprosy, tuberculosis, and syphilis, malignancy, thyroid disease, and in a fraction of otherwise healthy elderly individuals. Measurement of RF aids in diagnosis and assessment of these conditions.
