Use
This test aids in the detection of insulinoma and may help distinguish between type 1 and type 2 diabetes mellitus in ambiguous cases. However, it should not be used for diagnosing diabetes mellitus. C-peptide testing is crucial in assessing pancreatic function and insulin secretion, as it reflects endogenous insulin production. It is particularly useful in distinguishing between different types of diabetes and in evaluating conditions such as insulinomas and other pancreatic disorders.
Special Instructions
A fasting specimen is preferred for accurate results. The reference interval provided applies specifically to fasting specimens. To convert results from ng/mL to nmol/L, multiply the value by 0.33.
Limitations
This test should not be used to diagnose diabetes mellitus, as it is not intended for this purpose. Results can be affected by non-fasting status, leading to potential misinterpretation, especially in assessing pancreatic function and insulin secretion. The test is not suitable for standalone diagnosis without clinical correlation and further evaluations. Auto-antibodies or recent insulin therapy may interfere with the assay, affecting interpretability in some patients.
