Use
This test measures the level of somatostatin in plasma, which is useful in the diagnosis and management of neuroendocrine tumors such as somatostatinomas and pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors (PNETs). Measuring somatostatin levels can help in assessing the function of the somatostatin-secreting cells and monitoring treatment efficacy in patients with these conditions.
Special Instructions
Collect blood using a lavender top tube (K2EDTA or K3EDTA) that must be prechilled. Plasma should be separated from cells as soon as possible and then transferred to a transport tube which needs to be frozen immediately. The test is not performed at ARUP laboratories, thus, separate specimens are required if multiple tests are ordered.
Limitations
The test is not performed at ARUP Laboratories; specimens must be submitted separately for each requested test. It's important to handle the specimen correctly to prevent degradation of somatostatin. The specimen must remain frozen until testing, as thawing can compromise the test results. Grossly icteric or lipemic specimens may be rejected due to interference in the assay.
