Tick Identification with Reflex to Borrelia Species by PCR (Lyme Disease)

Use
This test is used for the identification of ticks and, if necessary, reflex testing to detect Borrelia species using PCR. It is relevant for the investigation of potential Lyme disease exposure or other tick-borne diseases. Identification of specific tick species, such as Ixodes scapularis, may prompt additional testing for Borrelia presence.
Special Instructions
The test is not performed at ARUP and requires separate specimen submissions for multiple tests. Transport the tick in 70% ethanol in a sterile container.
Limitations
The test should not be used as an initial Lyme disease investigation tool as tick testing for Borrelia species may not accurately reflect the pathogen status in humans. Reflex testing is only performed if certain tick species are identified. Additional charges apply for reflex testing. Frozen specimens are unacceptable and dry specimens or preservatives other than 70% ethanol can result in rejection.
