Ureaplasma Species and Mycoplasma hominis Culture

Use
The Ureaplasma Species and Mycoplasma hominis Culture test is used to culture and identify the presence of Ureaplasma species and Mycoplasma hominis organisms. These are significant in various clinical contexts including genital tract infections and neonatal respiratory infections. The test is particularly useful for patients presenting with symptoms suggestive of infections caused by these organisms, aiding in the diagnosis and management of such infections.
Special Instructions
Specimen source is preferred for accurate culture results. It is critical to place the swab or fluid in Mycoplasma/Ureaplasma transport media immediately after collection. The appropriate collection media can be procured online through ARUP Connect or by contacting ARUP Client Services.
Limitations
This culture will recover both Mycoplasma hominis and Ureaplasma species if present. This test is not suitable for determining mycoplasma contamination in any cell line or tissue culture. It is not appropriate for adult respiratory specimens other than lung transplant specimens, and no environmental cultures are performed. False negatives can occur if specimens are not collected or transported correctly, and culture techniques may not detect all cases of infection.
