Use
Zinc concentrations in red blood cells (RBCs) reflect the intracellular stores and general homeostasis of zinc. This test is useful for assessing zinc levels, especially when determining intracellular zinc stores rather than circulating levels, which can fluctuate rapidly. Zinc plays an important role in various biological processes, including immune function, DNA synthesis, and cellular metabolism.
Special Instructions
For assessment of deficiency over short periods of time, refer to Zinc, Serum or Plasma (0020097). For acute toxicity, Zinc, Urine (0020462) may be more reliable.
Limitations
Results may be falsely low if the RBCs in the submitted specimen are lysed or not promptly separated from plasma. It's important to collect and handle specimens as per the specified instructions to avoid inaccurate results.

Collection Instructions
Centrifuge whole blood and separate RBCs from plasma within 2 hours of collection. Submit packed RBCs in original collection tube OR transfer 2 mL RBCs to an ARUP Trace Element-Free Transport Tube.
Storage Instructions
Room temperature. Also acceptable: Refrigerated.
Causes for Rejection
Specimens collected in tubes other than royal blue (K2EDTA) or royal blue (NaHep). Clotted or grossly hemolyzed specimens.
