Acetone, Quantitative
Also known as: AC
Use
This test is used to monitor exposure to acetone. Acetone is a volatile organic compound, and toxic concentrations can cause nausea, vomiting, central nervous system depression, and respiratory depression. The quantitative measurement of acetone levels is important for diagnosing and managing acute or chronic exposure, particularly in emergency toxicology contexts. Understanding the acetone level can guide clinical decisions and treatment strategies in patients who are suspected of exposure or present with symptoms associated with acetone toxicity.
Special Instructions
Timing of specimen collection is dependent on time of exposure and should be conducted promptly upon presentation to hospital. Use a nonalcohol-based cleanser at the venipuncture site when drawing blood for alcohol testing to minimize contamination.
Limitations
This test does not have a defined therapeutic range, and its limit of detection is 5 mg/dL. The test is not cleared or approved by the US Food and Drug Administration. It is performed in a CLIA certified laboratory and is intended for clinical purposes. Results above 100 mg/dL are considered toxic and may lead to serious physiological effects. Conditions such as contamination and improper specimen handling may lead to inaccurate results. Whole blood and separator tubes like PST and SST are not acceptable for this test, which might affect the specimen selection and processing.
