Allergen, Food, Blue Mussel
Also known as: MUSSEL
Use
This test is used to quantify the allergen-specific IgE antibodies in patient serum to evaluate the risk of an allergic reaction to blue mussel. It is intended to assist in the diagnosis of allergic diseases related to ingestion of blue mussel. The test provides an ImmunoCAP score ranging from 0 to 6, which correlates with increasing concentrations of allergen-specific IgE. However, these concentrations may not always correspond to the degree of clinical response or results from skin testing when exposed to the allergen.
Special Instructions
Multiple patient encounters should be avoided when collecting specimens. Refer to 'Allergen Specimen Collection Instructions' for specific guidance when ordering multiple allergen tests. Use serum separator tubes for specimen collection.
Limitations
Allergen results between 0.10-0.34 kU/L have undetermined clinical relevance and should be interpreted by a specialist. Concentrations of allergen-specific IgE do not always correlate with clinical responses or skin test results. Negative results do not rule out allergies or anaphylaxis to blue mussel.
