Allergen, Food, Mint IgE
Also known as: MINT
Use
This test is used to measure the levels of allergen-specific IgE antibodies in the blood, specifically for the mint allergen. It is essential for assessing allergic reactions potentially triggered by mint. The test provides a quantitative measurement expressed in kilounits per liter (kU/L) that can indicate the probability of IgE-mediated clinical reactions to the allergen. The results are crucial for allergists and other healthcare providers to diagnose and manage patients with suspected allergic conditions and to correlate these findings with clinical history and in vivo reactivity.
Special Instructions
Multiple patient encounters should be avoided to ensure accurate results. After collecting the serum, it must be separated from cells as soon as possible or within 2 hours of collection. The extracted serum should be transferred to an ARUP Standard Transport Tube, with a minimum volume of 0.25 mL required for testing. For orders involving multiple allergens, refer to 'Allergen Specimen Collection Instructions'.
Limitations
While increasing concentrations of allergen-specific IgE typically indicate higher levels of allergy risk, these values do not always correlate with the severity of clinical symptoms or results from skin tests. This test may not detect all forms of clinical allergies or predict anaphylaxis risk. The clinical relevance of allergen results in the range of 0.10-0.34 kU/L is undetermined, and therefore, consultation with a specialist is recommended. There might be discordances between laboratory results and clinical presentations/development of symptoms.
