Allergen, Weed, Pigweed
Also known as: PIG
Use
The Allergen, Weed, Pigweed test is used to detect the presence of allergen-specific IgE antibodies in the serum, specifically related to Pigweed allergens. The test helps in the diagnosis of allergic reactions and sensitivities associated with exposure to Pigweed, which may cause symptoms such as rhinitis, asthma, or skin reactions. Quantitative measurement of IgE levels assists in understanding the potential for IgE-mediated clinical reactions.
Special Instructions
Multiple patient encounters should be avoided. Serum should be separated from cells as soon as possible, ideally within two hours of collection. For multiple allergen orders, refer to the "Allergen Specimen Collection Instructions" on the ARUP website.
Limitations
The correlation of allergy laboratory results with clinical history and in vivo reactivity to specific allergens is crucial. Allergen results from 0.10-0.34 kU/L are particularly intended for specialist use due to undetermined clinical relevance. Despite the presence of allergen-specific IgE, results may not directly correspond to the severity of clinical symptoms or in vivo testing outcomes. A negative result does not necessarily exclude the presence of an allergy or the risk of anaphylaxis.
