Carotene, Serum Total
Also known as: CARO
Use
The Carotene, Serum Total test is used to assess fat malabsorption. Carotene levels in the serum can provide insight into the body's absorption capabilities, particularly in conditions where fat absorption is impaired. This test can aid in the diagnosis and monitoring of malabsorption syndromes and other related disorders.
Special Instructions
Fasting specimens are preferred for accurate results. It's crucial to protect the specimen from light immediately after collection and during storage and shipment, utilizing special amber transport tubes for this purpose.
Limitations
The test is not suitable for specimens other than serum, and any refrigerated or room temperature specimens, as well as hemolyzed or icteric samples, will be rejected. Specimens must remain frozen during storage and transport to ensure stability and accuracy.
